TOOL · CONVERTER

Session converter and T+1 settlement date

Two things that go wrong across time zones: what regular hours mean where you are, and when money from a sale actually frees up. Both computed here.

Rule-based holidays only, no ad-hoc closures

Ten holidays are computed from their published rules: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr Day, Presidents' Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, with weekend observance applied. Ad-hoc closures (a national day of mourning, for instance) and early closes are not included. If timing is critical, go by the exchange's own notices.

The algorithm, and why it is built this way

What problem it solves

Two recurring confusions for anyone outside US hours: what time the market opens locally, and how many days "T+1" really means. The second catches people out because T+1 counts trading days, not calendar days, so weekends and holidays stretch it noticeably.

How the session conversion works

Regular hours are 9:30 to 16:00 US Eastern. The Eastern offset from UTC shifts with daylight saving — UTC-4 in summer, UTC-5 in winter, switching on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November. The page determines which applies to your chosen date, then converts into your selected zone.

How the settlement date is derived

The rule is "the next trading day after the trade date", where a trading day is neither a weekend nor a market holiday. Holidays are computed from published rules: fixed-date ones (New Year, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Christmas) shift to the nearest weekday when they fall at a weekend; floating ones (third Monday, last Monday, fourth Thursday) are computed positionally; and Good Friday is derived from the standard Easter algorithm, minus two days.

If the date you pick is not itself a trading day, the page moves the trade to the next one before computing settlement.

What it does not cover

No ad-hoc closures and no early closes. No pre- or post-market session times, since those arrangements get adjusted — go by your account. And it makes no network calls and consults no calendar service; everything is computed in your browser from the rules above. It is a converter for the rules, not a mirror of the exchange calendar.

Who needs it

Anyone whose waking hours do not overlap US sessions, and anyone with a date by which they need the money and therefore needs to work backwards to a sell date. The second group especially — around the December holiday cluster the gap is longer than people expect.
